The Weekend! (28-Jul-25)

The (Long) Weekend!

  • Thursday: Had hoped to get on the road in the late afternoon to head to Charlevoix to visit our old friend, Jason, but work had other plans. I was delayed leaving and had to bring my work laptop in the car with us so that I could wrap some things up on the road, which took about an hour. Finished that up as quickly as I could and once we approached the greater Charlevoix area I felt myself already starting to relax.
  • Friday: Woke up to breakfast made by our gracious host and watched Happy Gilmore 2 (it’s OK) before Shalee and I changed and packed for our annual Charlevoix/Petoskey bike ride. We stopped at Johan’s Bakery, as has become our tradition, but as they had just put out massive, fresh cinnamon rolls we got those instead of donuts.Did about 14 miles total before heading back to enjoy the Venetian Festival air show (lame) and Smash Mouth (also lame).
  • Saturday: Jason and I went to breakfast while Shalee nursed her twisted ankle from the night before; he had never been to Bayside Restaurant where they have very good breakfast (I had the pork-heavy eggs benedict). Then we grabbed our paddles and played five rounds of singles pickleball before cleaning up and heading to Boyne City for dinner at Cafe Sante. We had appetizers/drinks/dinner/dessert (I had the pork ribeye, NOMS!) before heading back to the cottage so that Shalee and I could catch the sunsetting into Lake Michigan at Michigan Beach Park.
  • Sunday: Slept in and then packed up before heading to the Young State Park for a couple of hours to spend some time in the water and do some beach reading (currently reading The Fourth Consort by Edward Ashton). We then lazily made our way home, stopping in Kalkaska for a delicious patty melt at the Trout Town Tavern & Eatery (as the Iron Skillet in Mancelona was closed) before getting home around 6 PM. We spent the evening home chilling and watched the recording of the England vs Spain Euros (women’s soccer).

All in all, it was a lovely weekend that went by far too fast, and as always, it was lovely to see Jason and his wonderful dog, Jazzy.

The summer is moving along quicker than I would like so I appreciate these moments when we can slow down for just a minute to enjoy our time.
